Caring for Established Proteas

Caring for established Proteas is simple with the right approach to watering, pruning and feeding. This expert guide outlines how to maintain healthy, thriving Protea plants in Australian conditions, whether grown in the garden or in pots.

Watering

Watering requirements will vary depending on your climate, soil conditions and the specific variety.

Plants described as tolerating dry conditions require minimal supplementary watering once established, except during extended dry periods. Varieties labelled moderate water should not be allowed to dry out completely.

For potted Proteas, consistent moisture is essential. During warmer months, daily watering is recommended to maintain plant health and vigour.

Feeding

In the garden

In most garden settings, established Proteas require little to no additional feeding. However, in poorer soils - such as sandy or nutrient-deficient conditions - applying compost and a slow-release fertiliser formulated for native plants can be beneficial.

In pots

Container-grown Proteas should be fed annually in late winter using a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser suitable for Australian natives.

Pruning

Pruning is essential to maintain shape, encourage healthy growth and promote flowering.

  • Always use clean, sharp secateurs
  • Tip prune young plants in spring and late summer to encourage branching
  • For mature plants, prune immediately after flowering

General Guidelines

  • Remove spent flower stems, cutting back to approximately 10cm of healthy growth
  • Avoid removing more than 50% of the plant at any one time
  • Ensure pruned stems retain sufficient green foliage for regrowth

Variety-Specific Notes

  • Leucadendron & Leucospermum: Prune after flowering by removing spent blooms and trimming stems to maintain a uniform shape
  • Protea & Telopea: Avoid cutting non-flowering stems, as these will produce next season’s flowers
  • Serruria: Prune immediately after flowering or harvest blooms, leaving around 10cm of healthy stem

As plants mature, thinning internal stems can help improve airflow and encourage longer, more desirable flowering stems.

Re-Potting

Potted Proteas will eventually require repotting as they outgrow their container. Move the plant into a larger pot with a well-draining native potting mix.

Cut Flowers

Proteas are prized for their exceptional vase life and bold, sculptural form.

To maximise longevity:

  • Use a clean vase and fresh water
  • Add one tablespoon of bleach per litre of water
  • Top up water daily
  • Display in a cool, shaded position
