Leucadendron Safari Sunset is one of the most iconic and widely recognised evergreen Proteaceae hybrids, celebrated for its dramatic red winter foliage, strong upright growth and exceptional cut flower performance. A hybrid derived primarily from Leucadendron laureolum, this award-winning variety is renowned for producing masses of rich burgundy-red bracts and dark stems that intensify in colour throughout autumn and winter.

Highly valued in both landscape design and commercial flower production, Leucadendron Safari Sunset delivers year-round structure, texture and seasonal colour. Its upright branching habit and dense evergreen foliage make it an outstanding choice for feature planting, screening, large garden borders and contemporary native-inspired landscapes.

Growing Instructions

Climate & Position
Leucadendrons thrive in:

• Full sun positions
• Open, well-ventilated areas
• Coastal and exposed gardens
• Mild to warm climates

For best colour and flowering performance, plants should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.


Soil Requirements
Excellent drainage is essential.

Leucadendrons prefer:

• Free-draining soil
• Slightly acidic soil conditions
• Sandy or loamy soils
• Raised garden beds where drainage is poor

Avoid:

• Heavy clay soils
• Waterlogged positions
• Poorly drained garden beds

If required, improve drainage by incorporating coarse sand or creating raised mounds.


Water Requirements

During Establishment:

• Water regularly for the first 12–18 months
• Allow soil to partially dry between watering
• Deep watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering

Once Established:

• Leucadendrons are highly drought tolerant
