Climate & Position

Banksias perform best in:
• Full sun
• Minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily
Shaded conditions typically reduce flowering and lead to weaker growth.


Soil Requirements
Banksias require excellent drainage and typically struggle in heavy clay soils.

Ideal soil types:
• Sandy soils
• Sandy loam
• Well-drained raised beds
Poor drainage often leads to root diseases such as Phytophthora.

Soil pH
Banksias prefer:
• Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7)
Highly alkaline soils can cause nutrient deficiencies.


Soil fertility:
Banksias are adapted to low-nutrient soils, particularly those low in phosphorus. Excess nutrients can damage roots.


Water Requirements

Establishment phase:
• Water regularly during the first 12–18 months to establish a strong root system.
• Keep soil moist but never saturated.

Mature plants:
Once established, many Banksias become quite drought tolerant. However, occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods will support flowering and growth.

Irrigation advice:
• Avoid frequent shallow watering.
• Allow soil to dry slightly between watering cycles.


Fertiliser
Banksias are phosphorus-sensitive due to specialised root systems.

Recommended fertilising approach:
• Use low-phosphorus native fertilisers
• Apply lightly in spring and autumn

Avoid:
• Standard garden fertilisers
• Manures high in phosphorus
• Over-fertilising

Organic soil conditioners such as composted mulch or seaweed products can be beneficial.


Mulching
Mulch helps maintain soil moisture and root health.

Recommended mulch materials:
• Pine bark
• Wood chips
• Leaf litter

Mulch should be applied:
• 5–8 cm deep
• Kept slightly away from the plant stem.
