Safari Magic

Leucadendron laureolum x salignum

Leucadendron Safari Magic is a vibrant evergreen Proteaceae hybrid celebrated for its spectacular seasonal colour, strong garden performance and outstanding cut flower appeal. A hybrid of Leucadendron laureolum and Leucadendron salignum, this striking variety produces masses of richly coloured bracts in tones of deep red, burgundy, gold and lime-green throughout autumn and winter.

With its naturally upright growth habit and dense evergreen foliage, Leucadendron Safari Magic creates bold structure and year-round interest in contemporary landscapes, coastal gardens and native-inspired plantings. As temperatures cool, the foliage colour intensifies dramatically, transforming the plant into a standout feature during the cooler months.

Perfect for design-led gardens, feature planting and premium cut flower production, Leucadendron Safari Magic pairs beautifully with Proteas, Banksias, Leucospermums and other drought-tolerant Australian plants.

Growing Instructions

Climate & Position
Leucadendrons thrive in:

• Full sun positions
• Open, well-ventilated areas
• Coastal and exposed gardens
• Mild to warm climates

For best colour and flowering performance, plants should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil Requirements
Excellent drainage is essential.

Leucadendrons prefer:

• Free-draining soil
• Slightly acidic soil conditions
• Sandy or loamy soils
• Raised garden beds where drainage is poor

Avoid:

• Heavy clay soils
• Waterlogged positions
• Poorly drained garden beds

If required, improve drainage by incorporating coarse sand or creating raised mounds.

Water Requirements

During Establishment:

• Water regularly for the first 12–18 months
• Allow soil to partially dry between watering
• Deep watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering

Once Established:

• Leucadendrons are highly drought tolerant
• Water only during extended dry periods

Overwatering is one of the most common causes of plant decline.

Fertilising
Leucadendrons are sensitive to phosphorus.

Use:

• Low-phosphorus fertilisers formulated for native plants or Proteaceae

Avoid:

• General-purpose fertilisers high in phosphorus
• Animal manures and excessive compost applications

Apply fertiliser lightly during spring and autumn if required.

Mulching

Apply mulch to:

• Help retain moisture
• Regulate soil temperature
• Suppress weeds

Keep mulch clear of the main stem to prevent rot.

Suitable mulches include:

• Pine bark
• Leaf mulch
• Gravel

Care & Maintenance

Pruning
Regular pruning helps maintain:

• Dense growth
• Better flowering
• Improved stem production
• Plant shape and longevity

General Pruning Guide

• Lightly prune after flowering or after coloured bracts fade
• Remove approximately 10–20cm of stem growth where suitable
• Avoid cutting into old bare wood without foliage

Tip pruning young plants encourages bushier growth and stronger structure.

Frost & Climate

Many Leucadendrons tolerate light frost once established, though protection may be beneficial for young plants in colder regions.

They are especially well suited to:

• Warm climates
• Coastal gardens
• Temperate Australian regions

Growing Leucadendrons in Pots
Many varieties perform exceptionally well in large pots.

For container growing:

• Use premium free-draining native potting mix
• Ensure excellent drainage holes
• Position in full sun
• Avoid overwatering

Repot as required to maintain healthy root development.

Cut Flower Harvesting
Leucadendrons are highly valued in floristry due to their:

• Long vase life
• Colourful bracts
• Strong stems
• Year-round foliage interest

Regular harvesting can also help promote bushier plant growth.
