Leucospermum Mardi Gras Ribbons is a spectacular evergreen pincushion protea hybrid admired for its unusual ribbon-like flowers and striking architectural form. Flowering through spring, this eye-catching variety produces masses of vibrant blooms in warm seasonal tones, creating exceptional texture and colour in gardens and landscapes. Its nectar-rich flowers attract birds and beneficial pollinators while also making outstanding long-lasting cut flowers for floral arrangements and displays.

Bred from Leucospermum conocarpodendron and Leucospermum glabrum, Mardi Gras Ribbons combines bold flowering with excellent adaptability to Australian conditions. Growing Instructions

Climate & Position:

Leucospermum thrive in a sunny, open position with good airflow. Plant in full sun for best flowering and growth. They are well suited to temperate, coastal and Mediterranean-style climates and are drought tolerant once established.

Soil Requirements:

Excellent drainage is essential. Leucospermum prefer sandy, gravelly or free-draining soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy clay soils or areas that stay wet, as poor drainage can lead to root rot.
As members of the Proteaceae family, Leucospermum are sensitive to phosphorus and prefer low-nutrient soils.

Water Requirements:

Water regularly during the establishment period, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and generally only require occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Avoid overwatering or constantly wet soil.

Fertilising:

Use only low-phosphorus fertilisers formulated for native or Proteaceae plants if required. Avoid strong fertilisers, manure or rich composts, as these can damage sensitive roots.

Mulching:

Apply a coarse mulch such as bark or wood-chips around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch away from the main stem to maintain airflow and prevent rot.
Care & Maintenance

Pruning:

Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a dense, compact shape and encourage healthy new growth. Remove spent flowers by cutting back the flowering stem to just above a healthy set of leaves.
Avoid cutting back into old, bare wood with no visible leaves, as Leucospermum may struggle to reshoot from older stems.

General Pruning Guide:

Regular tip pruning while plants are young encourages branching and improves flower production over time. Mature plants benefit from annual pruning after flowering to prevent woody, leggy growth and maintain shape.
Always use clean, sharp secateurs when pruning.

Frost & Climate:

Leucospermum prefer mild, frost-free climates and perform best in sunny positions with good airflow. Established plants can tolerate light frost, however young plants may require protection during colder conditions.
In cooler regions, avoid planting in low-lying areas where frost settles.

Growing Leucospermum in Pots:

Leucospermum can grow successfully in pots when planted in a premium free-draining native potting mix. Choose a large container with excellent drainage and position in full sun.
Container-grown plants will require more regular watering than garden-grown plants, particularly during warm weather, but soil should still be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering and use only low-phosphorus native fertilisers if required.

Cut Flower Harvesting:

Leucospermum are highly valued as long-lasting cut flowers. Harvest stems when flowers are fully coloured and beginning to open for the best vase life.
Regular harvesting can also help encourage branching and maintain a compact growth habit. Use clean secateurs and place stems into water immediately after cutting for best results.
