Serruria thrive in:
• Full sun
• Locations with excellent air movement

Adequate sunlight is essential for healthy growth and reliable flowering.


Climate
These plants are naturally adapted to Mediterranean climates, which feature:
• Cool, wet winters
• Warm, dry summers
• Light frost once established


Soil Requirements:
Free-draining soil is critical for Serruria.

Ideal soil types:
• Sandy soils
• Sandy loam
• Raised beds with improved drainage

Avoid planting in:
• Heavy clay soils
• Poorly drained garden beds.
Poor drainage often leads to root rot and plant decline.


Soil pH:
• Slightly acidic soil
• Ideal pH range 5.5–6.5
Highly alkaline soils can lead to nutrient uptake problems.


Soil fertility:
These plants are adapted to low-nutrient soils and are sensitive to high fertiliser levels.

Particularly important:
• Avoid fertilisers high in phosphorus.


Water Requirements

Establishment phase
During the first year after planting:
• Water regularly but lightly
• Maintain evenly moist soil
Avoid waterlogging.


Mature plants
Once established, Serruria become moderately drought tolerant.

Watering recommendations:
• Deep watering during extended dry periods
• Allow soil to partially dry between watering cycles.


Fertiliser
Serruria require minimal feeding.

Recommended approach:
• Apply low-phosphorus fertiliser for native plants sparingly in spring
• Use seaweed or organic soil conditioners if additional nutrients are required.

Avoid:
• High-phosphorus fertilisers
• Heavy feeding.


Mulching
Mulching helps maintain soil moisture and improve soil conditions.

Recommended mulch types:
• Pine bark
• Wood chips
• Leaf litter

Application guidelines:
• Spread 5–8 cm deep
• Keep mulch slightly away from the base of the plant.
Benefits include improved moisture retention, weed suppression and protection of shallow roots.
